Zero — Ground-Up Guide

Full Absolab + Arcane Weapon · One-Handed Keybind Setup · GMS v269 “Ride the Lightning” · updated July 2026
⚡ New in this version: “How Zero Actually Works” — read it first. It explains why your keys sometimes “stop responding.”

00TLDR

Zero alternates between Alpha (agile long-sword twin) and Beta (tanky heavy-sword twin) every ~3 seconds via Tag. Zero is a combo class: your 8 attack keys are combo chains with cooldowns, and the whole kit is built around a passive called Doubletime that refunds 4 seconds of cooldown every time you attack. That one fact explains everything — why you can’t mash a single key, why the rotations below alternate keys the way they do, and why Zero never stands still. With full Absolab + an Arcane weapon you’re past the early struggle: drill the combos below, finish your V-Matrix, unlock Hexa Mastery, and get a −2s cooldown hat (mandatory).

01How Zero Actually Works — Read This First

Five rules. Once these click, every rotation in this guide becomes obvious instead of memorized.

① One key = one combo chain (bind only the FIRST skill)

In the in-game Key Config you bind only the first skill of each chain. Pressing the same key again during the combo casts the follow-up automatically:

Pressing R three times as Alpha: RWind Cutter · RWind Striker · RAdv. Storm Break

You never bind Wind Striker, Storm Break, Piercing Thrust, Rolling Assault, Falling Star, etc. — they can’t be cast on their own. If you dragged any follow-up skill onto a key, that key does nothing. This is the #1 cause of “my keybinds are broken.”

② The chains have cooldowns — that’s why single-key spam stops

Each twin has 4 chains, numbered by the community as A1–A4 (Alpha) and B1–B4 (Beta):

A1 / B1
No CD
Moon Strike · Rising Slash — your filler
A2 / B2
5s
Flash Assault · Flash Cut — movement
A3 / B3
10s
Rolling Cross · Spin Driver
A4 / B4
15s
Wind Cutter · Giga Crash — big hitters

Once a chain finishes, its key is dead until the cooldown ends… unless you keep attacking — see rule ③.

③ Doubletime: every attack takes 4 seconds OFF your other cooldowns

This passive is the engine of the entire class. Each attack skill you land (and each keybound Burst Step) reduces your other attack skills’ cooldowns by 4 seconds.

Example — recycling Wind Cutter (15s CD):

Use R (Wind Cutter, now on 15s cooldown) → press QQQ (the free A1 chain) → that’s 3 attacks × −4s = 12s shaved off. With the −2s CD hat, Wind Cutter is already back. This is why Zeros never wait — pressing other keys IS how you reset your cooldowns.

Doubletime also stacks +1% damage per attack (up to +5% per twin, +10% total) — another reason to keep both twins attacking.

④ Tag & Assist: pressing the other twin’s key switches characters

As Alpha, pressing any Beta key Tags you into Beta (and vice-versa). Tag has a 3s cooldown, so you naturally alternate sides every ~3 seconds. During the ~3s after a tag, your combos automatically fire the resting twin’s Assist attacks — a huge chunk of Zero’s damage, completely free, no extra keys. Tagging also refills the resting twin’s HP and Time Force. Tagging (after the 3s timer) also cancels whatever animation you were stuck in — that’s “tag cancelling.”

⑤ Time Force is your mana — and Burst Step is your animation cancel

Time Force (TF): every skill costs TF. When the bar runs dry, your keys silently do nothing — the other classic cause of “I can’t spam my skills.” Fix: tag to the other twin (refills TF) and put 5–10 points into Hyper Stat Maximum Time Force. Bossing combos assume ~200 TF on Beta.

Burst Step (X): must be on a keybind (double-tap-arrows doesn’t count). X + Up/Down cancels almost any skill’s animation (GMS-exclusive tech) and also triggers Doubletime’s −4s. It’s both your teleport and your combo lubricant. Note it has its own ~1–1.5s internal cooldown, so don’t double-cancel back-to-back.

Why the old “R → W → R → W forever” advice didn’t work

Wind Cutter (R) has a 15s cooldown and Flash Assault (W) has 5s. After one pass, both keys are on cooldown, nothing casts, and it feels like the game is eating your inputs. Nothing was wrong with your keyboard — the loop itself was impossible. The corrected loops below weave in the no-cooldown A1/B1 chains so Doubletime keeps everything permanently off cooldown.

⌨️ Input tip: keyboard repeat settings

Zero rewards fast repeated presses. Either lower your OS keyboard repeat delay, or use the community “Filter Keys / regedit” trick so you can hold a key and have it register as rapid presses. The exact steps are pinned in the Zero Discord #faq-and-guide.

02Your Keybind Setup — One-Handed Layout

One hand on arrows, one hand near A-S-D-F. Alpha chains live on the top row QWER and Beta chains sit directly below on the home row ASDF — the same shape, one row apart, so tagging between twins is just “move down / move up one row.”

What to actually drag onto the keys (in Key Config)

Bind only these 8 base skills — the follow-ups chain automatically (rule ① above): Alpha: Moon Strike (Q), Flash Assault (W), Rolling Cross (E), Wind Cutter (R) · Beta: Rising Slash (A), Flash Cut (S), Spin Driver (D), Giga Crash (F). And bind Burst Step to X — it’s required for animation cancels.

03Mobbing — Loops That Actually Loop

Every loop below is legal under the cooldown rules: the free A1/B1 chains and tags feed Doubletime so the big skills come back before you need them. Each keycap = one press.

The Main Loop — Tornado Farming ALPHA

EASIEST Wind Cutter chain, then melt its cooldown with A1: RRR QQQ repeat forever R×3 = Wind Cutter → Wind Striker → Adv. Storm Break (tornadoes + shock field do the killing). Q×3 = the no-cooldown A1 chain: 3 attacks × −4s Doubletime = Wind Cutter is back. Walk/teleport between packs during the Q presses.

Tag Loop — More Damage, More Coverage

RECOMMENDED Alternate twins so Assists fire and Doubletime damage stacks: RRR DFDA repeat Pressing D as Alpha tags you into Beta; Giga Crash (F) fires the Wind Cutter Assist vortex for extra tornado spam. Pressing R as Beta tags you back. HP and Time Force refill on every tag.

Vertical Maps

E or X+ → then resume your loop Rolling Cross (E) is a forced upward attack; Up + Burst Step teleports a platform up. Weave either into the main loop when you need height.

Totally Lazy / Stationary BETA

DFDA repeat Beta-only stand-still loop. A (Rising Slash, no CD) plus Doubletime keeps D and F cycling. Lower effort, still decent clear on strong-spawn maps.
If a key ever “does nothing” while grinding

It’s one of three things: the chain is on cooldown (keep pressing your fillers — rule ③), you’re out of Time Force (tag to the other twin), or you bound a follow-up skill instead of the base skill (rule ①).

04Bossing — The Standard Loop

The current standard (v267/v269, 6th job). You cycle a Beta string and an Alpha string, tagging between them. The Assist portion happens automatically — you only press what’s written.

REQUIREMENTS Attack Speed 10 on Beta · 200 TF on Beta · −2s CD Hat · 6th Job (Lv 260+)

Beta side B3 B4 B3 B1 B3 B4

DFDADF Spin Driver → Giga Crash → Spin Driver → Rising Slash → Spin Driver → Giga Crash. Each D fires the powerful A3 Assist automatically. The A (no-CD filler) plus Doubletime is what lets D and F repeat.

Alpha side A4 A3 ↓BS A4 A3

RE (X+) RE Wind Cutter → Rolling Cross → cancel with Down Burst Step → Wind Cutter → Rolling Cross. The Down-Burst-Step cancel resets your animation so the second R comes out immediately (needs a platform below you).
The loop

Beta side → (pressing R tags you to Alpha) → Alpha side → (pressing D tags you to Beta) → forever. Tag every ~3 seconds, never stand on one twin — the Assists and Doubletime stacks are a huge share of your damage.

When Rhinne’s Prayer 1 is active (your burst window)

Cooldowns are effectively gone, so the strings simplify: Beta becomes DFDFDF (or end with A if Time Force is tight) and Alpha becomes R×5 — literally spam R five times.

Easier fallback combos (learn these first if the standard loop feels fast)

“Lehesol” combo — the classic trainer

Beta: B3 B4 B3 B2 → Alpha: A4 A1 A4 DFDS RQR Shorter strings, same tag rhythm. AS8+ is enough. Great first bossing loop.

“Double Spin”

Beta: B3 B2 B3 B2 → Alpha: A4 A1 A1 DSDS RQQ −2s CD hat recommended or B2 has a ~0.5s awkward gap.

Mobile variant (bosses that move a lot)

Beta: B3 B4 B3 B2 → Alpha: A2 A4 A2 A1 DFDS WRWQ Flash Assault (W) repositions you while you keep dealing damage — shines once Mastery Core 3 is leveled.
Notation reminder

Every keycap above = one press. “B3 B4 B3 B1…” style codes from the Zero Discord map to your keys as: A1–A4 = Q W E R, B1–B4 = A S D F. A digit repeated (e.g. A4444) means pressing that same key again to advance its chain.

05Burst Sequence — Exact Button Order

Zero’s “burst” is your normal DPM loop with every final-damage buff stacked on top. Setup starts 40 seconds early.

~40 seconds before burst

  1. Press J then K — pre-place both Shadow Flash sanctuaries near the boss (placing early means you get TWO detonation windows during burst).
  2. Keep comboing normally — Doubletime stacks and cooldowns keep cycling.
  3. Check Beta has ~200 TF before you start (tag rhythm normally keeps it full).

Burst — press in this order

  1. 1 Rhinne’s Prayer — long buff, always first.
  2. T Chrono Break — binds the boss + big final damage buff.
  3. 2 Transcendent’s Will — extra FD, also cleanses status.
  4. J then K — detonate both pre-placed Shadow Flashes.
  5. U Twin Blades of Time — brief hold is an iframe; release early and keep comboing.
  6. ` End Time (Origin) — 8.5s animation; make sure the buffs above are ALL active first.
  7. J then K — second Shadow Flash pair (back off cooldown by now).
  8. DFD… — Rhinne’s-Prayer versions of the standard loop for the rest of Chrono Break.
  9. B Time Holding when buffs run out — resets most cooldowns for the next cycle (Shadow Rain, Time Distortion, Terms & Conditions included).
SituationHold or use burst?
Boss bound & stationaryUSE — ideal window.
Boss about to phase / go invulnerableHOLD — don’t waste Chrono Break.
Party needs a bind NOWUSE Shadow Rain (H) even off-burst — you’re the party’s binder.
Boss teleports constantlyUSE — Zero is DPM, not true burst; you don’t need a still target.
Boss nearly dead (<30s)HOLD ` — the 8.5s Origin lock isn’t worth it.
About to dieB Time Holding — 10s iframe, always fine defensively.

06Bind Chaining — Hold the Boss Still

Zero is one of the few classes that can bind for 25+ seconds. Shadow Rain has no internal cooldown, and Rhinne’s Prayer / Time Holding both reset it.

The chain (Critical Bind procs automatically from Beta attacks): Critical Bind H T 1 H B H Shadow Rain → Chrono Break → Rhinne’s Prayer (resets Shadow Rain) → Shadow Rain → Time Holding (resets again) → Shadow Rain ≈ 26s of bind with zero CD-skip items. Erda Nova (N) extends further; with CD-Skip inner ability, 60s+ is possible.
Shadow Rain rule: never eat the full animation

Raw Shadow Rain locks you in place ~3–4.5 seconds. Cast it mid-tag-window and immediately press an opposite-twin skill to tag-cancel it — or cancel with Up + Burst Step. The bind applies the instant you press H, so cancelling costs you nothing.

07How to NOT Lose Damage

MistakeFix
Mashing one key, then waitingZero has no “main attack.” When a chain ends, press a different chain — every attack refunds 4s of cooldown (Doubletime). Waiting is the only real DPS loss.
Staying on one twinTag every ~3s, always. Assist damage + Doubletime stacks (+10% damage) + free HP/TF refills all come from tagging.
Binding follow-up skillsOnly base skills go on keys (Moon Strike, Flash Assault, Rolling Cross, Wind Cutter, Rising Slash, Flash Cut, Spin Driver, Giga Crash). Follow-ups chain on the same key.
Ignoring Time ForceDry TF = dead keys. Tag to refill; take 5–10 Hyper Stat TF; Beta needs ~200 TF for the bossing string.
Not cancelling Alpha animationsX + ↓ (keybound Burst Step) cancels almost any skill. It’s built into the Alpha bossing string — drill it until automatic.
Raw Shadow Rain (H)It animation-locks you for seconds. Always cast mid-tag and cancel by tagging (or Up + Burst Step). The bind lands on press.
No −2s CD hatCombos develop gaps and Ego Weapon uptime tanks. This is mandatory gear, not a luxury.
Bursting without pre-placed J/KPlace both Shadow Flashes ~40s early — that’s two detonation windows per burst instead of one.
Holding U (Twin Blades) too longIt’s an iframe with weak damage. Release early unless you need the dodge — and never use Origin during the hold (it voids hits).
Origin (`) at the wrong momentDamage registers mid-animation. Confirm Chrono Break + Rhinne’s Prayer + Transcendent’s Will are ALL running first.

085th Job — V-Matrix (Lv 200+)

With Absolab + Arcane weapon done, V-Matrix is your main power investment until 260.

PriorityNodeWhy
17 perfect tri-nodes (boost nodes)Direct Final Damage % on your combo chains. Always first — craft them manually, don’t gamble drops.
2Decent Holy SymbolMandatory for grinding — keep maxed forever.
3Shadow Flash / Ego WeaponFarming AND bossing DPM. Shadow Flash 40s CD; Ego Weapon auto-procs (15s) and even feeds Doubletime.
4Weapon Aura / Twin Blades of TimeWeapon Aura = passive IED + FD; Twin Blades damage-per-level is decent.
5Transcendent / Chrono BreakYour burst buffs — Transcendent is marginally more efficient per point.
6Rhinne’s PrayerLast — Chrono Break already covers most burst FD.
7Decent Sharp Eyes / Speed Infusion1 point each gives the full benefit — don’t overinvest.

Tri-node coverage (skills worth boosting)

Boost nodes pair one Alpha + one Beta skill per line. Cover your combo chains — a clean 7-node set:

1Wind Cutter (R)Giga Crash (F)
2Wind StrikerFalling Star
3Storm BreakGroundbreaker
4Rolling Cross (E)Spin Driver (D)
5Rolling AssaultWheel Wind
6Piercing ThrustAir Riot
7Moon Strike (Q) + Shadow RainRising Slash (A)

Nodestones aren’t scarce anymore — boost skill nodes in any order that feels natural, but tri-nodes + Holy Symbol always come first.

096th Job — Hexa Matrix (Lv 260+)

Patch v269 “Ride the Lightning.” Hexa priority charts shift every patch — cross-check Maplescouter for your exact stat spread.

Origin — End Time (`)

8.5s animation, ~1,000,000%+ total damage, 10s bind on cast. Level whenever points allow — it scales your whole kit’s ceiling.

Mastery Cores — level strictly in order 1 → 2 → 3 → 4

CoreEnhancesNotes
Mastery 1A4/B4 (Wind Cutter / Giga Crash) + Time PieceFirst unlock — your most-used chains. Also fixes Giga Crash’s slow animation, enabling the modern Beta string.
Mastery 2A3/B3 (Rolling Cross / Spin Driver)Bigger hitboxes; blades take an FD penalty on repeat same-target hits.
Mastery 3A2/B2 (Flash Assault / Flash Cut)Unlocks the mobile combo variant for high-movement bosses.
Mastery 4A1/B1 (Moon Strike / Rising Slash) + HEXA Shadow RainLast core — also a big Shadow Rain damage upgrade.

Enhancement cores (+60% FD each) — suggested order

OrderEnhancementWhy
1Ego WeaponPassive, highest uptime, always active.
2Chrono BreakUsed every burst; buff duration 25s→30s, FD bonus 36%→46%.
3Shadow FlashFrequent DPM skill, 40s CD.
4Twin Blades of TimeOnce per burst cycle — lowest frequency.

Hexa Stat: prioritize Origin/Mastery-linked boosts before generic lines; the Zero Discord keeps two live charts (Erda-limited vs Fragment-limited) in #faq-and-guide — they change nearly every patch.

Star your Arcane weapon to 17–18★ before Genesis — liberation sets it to 22★ regardless, so stars past that beforehand are wasted meso. Zero’s weapon stars at level-150-equivalent cost, one of the class’s best perks.

13Boss-Specific Tips (Your Keys)

BossTips
DarknellUp-Burst-Step (X+↑) over the Mage’s ball and Bowman’s arrow. Binds stop every pattern except the full-screen blade shockwave.
Guardian Angel SlimeImmune Barrier (Beta passive) is your best friend on green lasers. V (Blink float) escapes triangle/X patterns; B (Time Holding) beats the stun if timed.
Lucid / WillYou’re the party’s main binder — coordinate H (Shadow Rain) with your party’s binds instead of stacking them.
Verus HillaHeal-lock blocks Tag’s HP refill — potion discipline matters. H on-demand can save a mispositioned party member from the bone wave (bind lands on press).
Black MageT (Chrono Break) slow still works in P3 despite bind immunity. 2 (Transcendent’s Will) cleanses darkness/stun each phase.
Hard SerenW (Flash Assault) + X to dodge mines; hold U (Twin Blades) through noon diagonal patterns.
KalosNEVER H (Shadow Rain) during post-test Groggy — it overrides the groggy state and wakes him early. Binds in active phases only.
